The All Powerful BAG

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the 8th Edition of Men's Fashion NYC. Today, I decided to tackle the all powerful Bag. Many of us men have a very hard time dealing with how to wear a bag with their ensemble. Yes, I said WEAR a bag. Whether it is a messenger, carpet or a brief (Don't worry, I don't expect you to know what any of these are yet) I am here to give you some pointers on how to sport the right bag, with the right clothing, to give you a look people will move around YOU for while walking down Madison!

These, days, a bag will tell everyone around you what kind of man you are. I know many will disagree with me, but lets face it if you see someone wearing a Jansport Backpack and a man with a Gucci weekender you get an idea of what kind of fashion sense both of them possess. Don't get me wrong, every situation has it's bag. You wouldn't take a brief case with you on a camping trip in the Adirondacks, would you? of course not! That is why I am here to tell you what kind of bag to use, where to get it and how to sport it so you can be fashionable in every situation.

I know most of us men go to the gym. If you don't, then I would suggest joining one. I won't go into my health spiel, but a healthy man = a good looking man = a stylish man. they all work in the fashion circle of life. When going to the gym, don't settle for the average duffel. We all forget that there might be prospects in every situation! A nice, solid leather duffel is the key to looking your best. Now, it doesn't have to be a premier Louis, but something simple from Filene's Basement that Will cost you about $80.00 will suit you perfectly! Here is and example:

This is your classic Louis Solid Duffel or Weekend Bag. This Will run you about $1600.00, but you'll look damn good!

OR

A Beautiful Torino Black Duffel for about $136.00 that is not only stylish, but affordable!

Now and then, we all love to get out of the city for a weekend. It's just something we all need to do. Let's say not only escaping for the weekend, but staying over at a boyfriend's/girlfriend's house for the night and you need to bring a change of clothes because you have to work the next morning. The Leather Duffel is a perfect way to go. Not only to you have room for every amenity that you need, but you are able to look sleek and stylish.

What to wear, what to wear! well, if you are an avid reader, you can tell that I am an earth tone kind of guy. These bags go with that mindset. Try to stay neutral. If you decided to go with a mostly black wardrobe, keep the bag either black or brown. BUT, if you are sporting an ALL black look, head to toe, spice it up with a lighter toned bag. Such as a white or blue as shown below. Although these Louis Vuitton Bags are quite pricey, similar brands can be found at H&M or even at Filene's for a fraction of the cost!
I bet you you are asking, How many and of what kind of bags should I have? Well, that is an awesome question. I have compiled a bag chart and outfit suggestions below to answer those questions!

The Fossil Montana or what I call the Rugged Messenger is a must have for casual business meetings, visits to the park for some writing or even going on minor nature adventures. This bag goes with ANY outfit, except anything involving short shorts. Keep it simple, no bright colors. ($139.00 Fossil.com)

This is the Average Louis Messenger. Any man Deserves a Messenger bag for minor outings, and casual as well as formal business meetings. This goes with any outfit. Stick with a black bag and it can be worn with anything from a suit to a summer ensemble. Try it with a pair of Euro Khaki/White Capris during July or with a Black overcoat in January! (Louis $1,400.00, Macy's $145.00 - you choose!)

As I discussed before, A man needs a designer/Leather Duffel, in this case, I love the Louis Vuitton Keepall Duffel bag. I can be used to go to the gym, weekend trips and even a s a small carry on. Remember, there are many brands out there that are much more affordable, and I would suggest going that route, but if you would like to treat yourself, this would be the ultimate statement.

And then there was the Tote. This is a staple to any man's wardrobe. this can be used for sporting events, and anything in between. Throw on some loafers and you're ready! Choose a bright color that expresses YOU. It's most important when it comes to the tote.

Last, is the Men's Bandouillère Hand Bag. This is an essential that should be held at your side or over the shoulder. Whether is a square design or a bowling bag, this is essential on an average outing to any extent and style.

Well, there you have it. I hope all of you out there are able to take this info and apply it to your every day fashion needs. With the right bag, with the right ensemble, you are bound to get the respect you deserve...even if your runway may be 59th Street!

Gossip Guys - Do You Have What It Takes?

Ive decided to take on writing about the Phenomenon called "Gossip Girl". This season, I got the opportunity to become a Gossip Guy myself on the Television show. I may not have been a Chace Crawford or a Penn Badgley, but let's face it, who is? In today's publication, I want to prove to you that you may be closer to being a Gossip Guy than you think. Looks, Style, Fashion is what you need ... oh, and one more thing ... ME! and I am here to show you.
Let's start with Looks. Let's face it, we are not all top models. I will tell you, a good 75% of us on the show are definitely NOT. But the one thing that puts the cast of Gossip Girl above the rest is what I like to call LOOK CONFIDENCE. As long as you have the knowledge that you are a sexy, young beast, you are half way there! Easier said then done, right? But let's get into the fashion side. It seems like the boys in the show have a cool sense of preppy meets edgy look. As difficult as this concept may seem, its not that difficult to execute. Let me show you some examples.

Apart from the St. Jude's School for Boys uniform, we meet the many students at high class Upper East Side Parties in slick, stark lines of drab colors and formal satires of what their parents want them to wear.

Take out that White Button Up and that Tux shirt and unbutton it to the 4th button

Use a skinny Black Tie and wrap it around your Left Bicep with a button up white oxford. Very sexy.

Also, A wonderful addition to any Male's wardrobe is the Black Velvet Blazer. It is the classy touch that the single woman would NEVER expect a straight man to wear to a function and the item a gay man should have purchased when he was 12...Seriously guys, YOU NEED ONE OF THESE. You can purchase one at H&M for under 50.00 or at ZARA for about $129.99. I'd go with the ZARA brand, but if you are on the pinch this month, go with H&M. Believe me, you'll have the girl in the bag, and that hot guy out of the the closet in no time.

Every man needs to know the word TAILORED. This word is the key to Chic Male Style. Let's face it, Baggy is out. Very FAR OUT. Now, I don't mean completely convert to the extremely tight English rock look, but where your trousers fit. It is all about the European mindset. As males, we should show off our bodies as much as we can. It is what women want. They want to get a peak at what they are investing in. I kid you not gentlemen. The tapered pant look is in now. Throw some of those Euro fitted Tapered trousers with some Chucks or some pointed black shoes with a solid deep earth tone long sleeve, contrasting scarf and you're there.
Well, there you go with the styles of the boys on Gossip Girl. Let's face it, we may not be as Hot as say Ed Westwick, but one things for damn sure, we can dress like them!

Scarf Choices and Blunders

So yesterday I got asked a very legitimate question about how to succeed with the "Draping" scarf look. It is a look that is one of my favorites, but can be a bit challenging if not executed the right way. A good trick to use is to stick with a full color scheme when it comes to your outfit. Whether it be mostly black, brown, blue, etc., pick out a neutral color that will add a flair. Here are a few color ideas:

Dark Blue Jeans, white undershirt, Black cardigan or fitted zip-up (no hoodie), lack dress shoes and a deep red scarf.

Black Slacks, Brown v-neck, Dark brown cardigan, Brown dress shoes or dress tenies and a beige scarf.

Mostly Blue outfit with a maroon scarf

Just a few ideas when it comes to color schemes. Now, when it comes to how to drape your scarf to make it look chic, but not ridicules, I would use a sheer black/brown/red scarf sold at H&M.
  • Wrap it once around the neck loosely, making sure the ends are even with each other (Example 1). Not tucked in.
  • Draping the scarf without wrapping and letting it flow freely or you may want to tuck it in as well.
  • Wrap the scarf once around the neck loosely then situate the tails one infront of your chest and the other across the back. this is a wondeful winter wonderland look that always is a treat (Example 2).
  • One of my favorites, using example 1, then bringing one end up and through ( like the third step in tieing a tie) is great as well. This is used mostly with longer scarfs.

The trick is to own your outfit! Here are a few photo ideas on how to wear your scarfs this Autumn:

Example 1

Example 2

Here we see the european style. halving the scarf, wrapping it around and pulling the double ends through...this option is the warmest and most functional.

I hope this was of some help. If you haven't read my newest blog Daniel On The Day, Please do so, it is right below!

Thank you for the question and thank you for reading my friend : )

Daniel On The Day

Hello everyone and welcome to today's edition of Men's Fashion NYC!

I apologize for the wait, in researching for future publications, time may pass. But worry not, I am here and ready to get you into the know...so let's go!

DANIEL RADCLIFFE.

A Force to be reckoned with. He is making his Broadway Debut here in New York in "EQUUS" and is taking the city by storm. I wanted to talk a little about him today because of the fact that he is a young force in pop culture and also in young Fashion. He is bringing a hard, cutting edge London look to us, and he maybe doesn't even know it! Now, most New Yorkers are pretty quaint when it comes to body type. We all have to walk everywhere and it seems like there is a gym of every kind in every area. Daniel's small stature may be tough for the average American to mimic, but I assure you, it's not as difficult as you think...and DEFINITELY not as costly.

Daniel seems to stick with dark. I am a firm believer that the darker, the easier. When you dabble in Bright colors, you are setting yourself up for trouble unless you have an eye for mixing. take a look at this example:

Even though this may be a young photo of Daniel, his sense of pattern using dark touches are very well received. I am a HUGE fan of floral print. It gives a nice sense of high class and taste in every aspect. A Deep floral button up under a Black Velvet Blazer and Dark Blue Jeans or slacks (depending on whether you are going to a lounge or the Opera) fit together nicely. You can usually purchase a stylish dark floral pattern shirt at ZARA for about $39.99 and purchase a black velvet blazer at H&M for about $69.99 or at Zara for about $99.00. $149.99 on a high class outfit is a pretty good deal, and believe it or not, no one will care what you paid. You will just look damn good.

Here are a few more ideas that have been inspired by Daniel Radcliffe's English/European forte:

Here we are introducing color into the mix. Topped with a dark blazer and a simple sky blue button up, it makes for a simple, fine-lined look that suggests style savyness.

(Blazer - H&M $49.99, Dress Shirt - H&M $19.99)

Here we see Daniel going what I call the "New York Way". Stiff Black all around with a touch of tan...in this case the hat. All black is flattering and slick. But accent with a tan or beige and you bring your fashion level up a few notches. I would suggest a draping scarf or even tan gloves for an accessory direction. A solid tan shirt beneath the black overcoat will suggest a smooth transition into the New York Elite.

(Black Leather Jacket - H&M $99.99, T Shirt Black - H&M $9.99, Dark Jeans - Barney's CoOp $79.99)

All of these fashions can be achieved by just stepping inside a Zara or an H&M. Affordable and Affirm able.

Have comments and questions? Let me know! Thank you for your time today, more to come this week! Gossip Girl...and how to get yourself ready for the the mild cold of Autumn!

The Magic of D&G This Fall

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to the newest Edition of Men's Fashion NYC!

So all this weekend I got to travel to Princeton to visit my cousin and a few family members I haven't seen in a few years. It was a truly wonderful weekend and I didn't want it to end. I went to Philadelphia for the first time as well. While on this trip I had the chance to peak into the new DETAILS magazine focusing on the newest Fall Fashions to be introduced to East Coast stores this month. One ad that really sparked my mind was the newest D&G winter ad. Here is one of my favorites:

As you can see, this ad is giving you alot! The thing I'd like to point out are the Trapper hats on the men. Last season, American Eagle tried to make these a popular winter accessory but failed miserably. This season, I am a true believer that they will be the hot item on the streets in the deathly cold weather expected this winter.

If you haven't noticed, this summer has been fairly mild, meaning we will be having not just a tough winter, but a brutal one. We can already feel the forthcoming winter in early September!

Now, These Trapper Hats run about $1,219.00 at D&G. 'I don't think so' was my reaction when peeking at the price tag. I also was a little thrown off by how large and RIDICULES they were! Then I thought to myself, I'm going to find one that is similar, but about 85% less...and not so HUGE. And of course, I succeeded!

This is the same type of Trapper, yet a little different. Not from D&G, but from H&M! and not $1,000...12.95! Now, I have tried on a few different models of Trapper Hat, and they all have to be engineered correctly for them to even think about being close to attractive. The cut on this specific one is perfect. It's not too drastic, yet makes a fashion statement. You can also grab the scarf that can accompany it for the same price! This could be worn in these Different combinations of clothing below the brow:

Option 1:

Mostly Black. Dark base colored long sleeve shirt or thermal under a BLACK high collared cardigan zip-up/sweater. Make sure the sweater is solid black, patterns in this option won't work. (Optional matching stole/scarf tucked into the sweater) Black slacks or dark jeans/dark grey. Black high boots, preferably riding boots or ankle. If Ankle Boots are the chosen option, then make sure the slacks cover the top...the riding boots will go over the pant. Grey Gloves.

Option 2:

Deep Pattern. Use a long sleeve solid colored shirt or thermal under a flannel or deep red striped sweater. No Bright colors. Think Maroon/Deep Blue/Forrest Green. Deep blue jeans tucked into riding boots or tucked into Timberlands...yes Timbs. Brown Gloves.

Option 3:

Naked. Always a hit in bed, hehe.

I am very excited to be wearing this hat this winter and I guarantee you, you'll be a hit on the streets. Make sure you don't forget your AVIATOR shades as the sun bouncing off the snow and buildings will be a little much.

So there is a little idea of mine when it comes to the newest D&G edition. Later on this week, I will be discussing Daniel Radcliffe's London style in our midst and also delve further into looking your best this season the D&G way....just without having to beg once a week on the A train and make up a child acro team on the N train....

Our Pre-View into this Week!

Hello All,

I just received my newest issue of DETAILS magazine with Daniel Radcliffe on the cover. I have taken a few minutes to Page through the newest ads in the first 15 pages and have to say, this is going to be a lovely Autumn. As we start to feel the chill linger through the city, we are going to be hungering for the urge to throw that stylish overcoat on. Just tonight I wanted to take a stroll in the 66 degree air just to feel the weight of an overcoat on my shoulders. How do you feel about this? Here are a few points I will be discussing in my next posting to be published tomorrow evening!

  • DETAILS magazine intro into Fall 2008 in the newest October Issue!
  • A Discussion on Daniel Radcliffe's entrance into American fashion, vrai or feux?
  • What we think of the new D&G fall/winter campaign and how you can look D&G this fall without dropping the G's

All of this and more to come out tomorrow!

The First and Foremost - The Start

Hello all of my fellow New Yorkers and Fashion Friends,

My name is Marcus Lovingood and this is the first of my many Online Publications that I will be writing bi-weekly. I'd like to outline what I will be writing for all of you, because I truly believe this is going to be an amazing tool for any male looking to be a MASTER of dressing in New York High Fashion...without having to skip a few meals! For all of you who read anything interesting about New York Fashion from Magazines such as DETAILS, GQ, Men's VOGUE and more, I'll delve into the newest fashion and styles of the season and tell you how to look just like those models in those ads without the cost! This publication is not strictly for males; I'm sure lots of females will enjoy reading this to help out their fashion-struggling boyfriends. Or for the guy who is looking to really wow those girls with their newfound fashion savyness. From Gay to Straight, from Male to Female, from across the globe, I feel everyone can have a piece of the pie! I promise you, it will be worth your time. It is one thing to make time and one thing to waste it...and I hate when people waste my time!

Why is my opinion so important, you ask? Well, let me tell you a little about myself. I am an actor living in the city and I have a love for fashion. If I didn't have a love for being on the stage or screen, I'd probably be in the Fashion Industry. I've had the privilege of traveling all around the world and seeing the way men dress. I have also evaluated different trends that I think EVERYONE should know about without having to hop on a plane to Shibuya 109(2) in Tokyo or the Galleria Lafayette in Paris. That is why I am writing this for all of you who desire to stick out from the everyday Joe and really look good!

It is very interesting how a person is treated differently just because they are fashionably sound. I have first hand experience in this matter and I will give examples of and give tips on how to join this private club. I will analyze those crazy fashion ads and entertain the minds of those seeking an in to the secret world of successful men who dress well that aren't millionairs. There is even something in here for those Millionairs that want to find out how to dress as well...fear not, I have not forgotten about you guys!

I will also provide links to products and breakthrough services at the end of each article which I will discuss for all of you to possibly invest in. I wouldn't place these ads in my article if I didn't fully believe in them, so I urge you to check them out! They also keep this publication going. One really awesome thing is if you decide to purchase any of the products or services, just by being a subscriber of my publication, you'll get a $5 rebate directly from me. I think that's an incentive to give them a try. And truthfully, they are going to be awesome deals, I promise.

I always love comments, so I welcome opinions and suggestions on what you'd like to see or know about in the future. I'll also ask for opinions on certain topics as well as questions you might have on fashion. I will answer your questions promptly and to the best of my Fashion knowledge.

Well, I believe this is a wonderful start to a truly groundbreaking publication for all of us just looking to look good. So here we go!

Truly,

Marcus Lovingood
